Shade Structure
Site: Private Residence, West Hollywood, CA
Designers: Jeanine Centuori and Russell Rock
The typology of the Southern Californian shade structure is reworked to create an adjustable condition that addresses seasonal and daily changes of the sun’s orientation. With a simple mechanical device, individual wooden louvers may be adjusted in three different positions to create differing shade angles. Two stainless steel “beams” are waterjet cut with a slot pattern to provide three placements for the louvers—vertical, and two opposing 45-degree angles. A series of wood louvers spans the two stainless beams to create the adjustable shade structure. Each louver may be adjusted individually allowing for different amounts of shade along the length of the structure.
