Client: Proposal for City of Atlanta, Office of Cultural Affairs
Neighborhood Fabric is a proposal for Fire Station 18 in the Kirkwood area of Atlanta. This historic section of the city has many examples of Victorian frame houses. The artwork is crafted from architectural details collected from a photo-survey conducted in Kirkwood. These bits and pieces of gingerbread are knit into a sequence of lace-like patterns to be used on the windows of the lobby for the new Fire Station 18. They are at once both part of Kirkwood and a contemporary interpretation of the neighborhood. The glass is to be fritted, etched, and sandblasted to mediate the sunlight entering the building while casting images on the interior surfaces.
