The approach to the Gateway to Hollywood project is a strategy of metaphor and layering. The central metaphor is one of the importation of water from the north to Los Angeles that allowed the city to grow. Once water was provided, other imports followed: people, plants, cultures, occupations. All of these things dwelt upon a chaparral landscape made lush with water resources. Two gardens, one arid, one lush, are to be planted on the site telling this narrative.
The LED lit sign stands as a beacon marking the north entry into Hollywood. It displays a changing palette of colored lights at night.
